Collaborative Design Group Creative Thinking... Thoughtful Solutions
Smith Avenue

The multi-modal Smith Avenue Transit Center was planned as a central element in St. Paul’s redevelopment of its western gateway to downtown. The Center is a critical element in this key area, where entertainment, sport, office, and medical districts come together. It has been designed as part of a comprehensive urban planning effort that considered the needs of retail development, entertainment venues, and the burgeoning office and housing stock in the vicinity.

As architect, planner, and structural engineer for the City’s team, Collaborative Design Group developed a project that provides a comfortable and secure environment for event goers, pedestrians, parking patrons, and bus customers within a convenient walk to St. Paul’s businesses and entertainment venues. The exuberant design serves as a landmark and gateway to downtown.

The new transportation center includes:
  • 600 public parking spaces for both event and contract parking
  • An extension of and improvements to the overall function of Smith Avenue to accommodate event traffic from the adjacent Xcel Energy Center
  • A layover facility for 16 Metro Transit and charter buses, a passenger boarding area, bus schedule and visitor information displays, and a bus driver rest area
  • Bicycle lockers
  • Innovative public art installations
