As Winona State University approached its sesquicentennial, the need for a fresh Comprehensive Planning and Facilities study became more urgent. Guidance was needed to allow continued growth for this picturesque campus in the heart of historic Winona, while maintaining its intimate scale.
A comprehensive utilization study of all academic areas was conducted to quantify the needs and facility resources of each department on campus. Current and expected instructional modalities were considered. From this carefully defined statement of academic needs, a facility response was developed. This Comprehensive Plan indicated strategies to meet present and future needs, and provided guidelines to ensure that new development (or renovation work) would not compromise the essential quality of the University’s grounds and facilities.
In addition to considering facility tactics, a careful analysis of the campus open space, its functions, and its relationship to the surrounding residential district was developed. From this work, a long-range vision of the features and amenities of the entire 23 block campus was refined.
